Mykhailo Filiponenko, a member of the Russian-created parliament of occupied Luhansk and a former top security official in the region, died after a car bomb exploded, his son was quoted as saying by a local news agency.

Filiponenko, who took an active part in the pro-Russian separatist movement in Luhansk since 2014, was one of the senior commanders of the army of the so-called LPR.

In September, he was elected to the regional parliament in a vote that drew widespread international condemnation.

After February 2022, bombings targeting senior officials installed by Moscow in parts of Ukraine that the Russian Federation claims to have annexed have become commonplace.

Luhansk is one of four Ukrainian regions annexed by Russia since the beginning of its invasion.
