Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has invited Donald Trump to visit Ukraine after the former US president promised that he could end the war between Russia and Ukraine within 24 hours if he is re-elected in 2024, nbcnews.com reports.
Zelensky doubts Trump’s statement. “This is what former President Trump said [în] about 24 hours that he can solve and end the war. For my part, what can I say? So he is also very welcome. President Biden was here as well — I think he picked up on some of the details that can only be picked up by being here,” Zelensky told NBC News’ Kristen Welker. “So, I’m inviting President Trump,” News.ro notes.
“If he can get here, it will take me 24 minutes – yes, 24 minutes. Not more. So. No more than 24 minutes for an explanation [preşedintelui Trump] that he cannot lead this war” in this term, Zelenskyi said. “He cannot bring peace because [preşedintelui rus Vladimir] A little.”
Zelensky is not sure that Trump will support Ukraine if re-elected, telling Welker: “I really don’t know. Seriously, I don’t know.”
In a September interview, Trump said that if re-elected, he would start a war in Ukraine within 24 hours. He offered few details on how he would accomplish the task, saying, “No, no, no. If I tell you exactly, I will lose all my bargaining power.”
“I would say some things to Putin. I would say certain things to Zelensky,” Trump said at the time, adding that he would “make a fair deal for everyone.”
Other Republican presidential candidates have visited Ukraine and met with Zelenskyi during their campaigns, including former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former Vice President Mike Pence, who has since suspended his 2024 campaign.
Zelensky also noted that he had no contact with Trump after the former US president left office in January 2021.
The President of Ukraine emphasized that when it comes to supporting Ukraine, the opinion of not only American leaders, but also the American people is important.
“It depends not only on the president from an institutional point of view. I think it depends on the opinion of Americans, your society. I think that’s the most important thing,” he said. “I think it’s important in the United States and in the EU to have the attitude of ordinary people. The point is their support. It’s about their money. It depends on them.”
He added: “I know that they cheer for Ukraine, they love us. And indeed, they understand our difficult, difficult war against Russia.”
