The average Palestinian in Gaza lives on two slices of Arabic bread made from flour that the United Nations stores in the region, but the main cry heard in the streets now is “Water, water,” said the director of the UN refugee agency in Gaza. Palestinians

Thomas White, who said he had traveled “through and through Gaza in recent weeks”, described the site as “a scene of death and destruction”. There is no safe place now, he said, and people fear for their lives, their futures and their ability to feed their families.

The Palestine Refugee Agency, known as UNRWA, supports about 89 bakeries in Gaza to make bread for 1.7 million people, White told diplomats from 193 UN member states during a video conference from Gaza.

But, according to him, “now people are not only looking for bread, they are looking for water.”

The UN’s deputy Middle East coordinator, Lynn Hastings, who is also the humanitarian coordinator in the Palestinian territories, said that only one of the three water lines in Israel is working.
