Russia said on Thursday that the pro-European President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, was a “disgrace” to her country and accused the government in Chisinau of trying to distract from its own failures ahead of local elections by exaggerating the threat from Moscow, Reuters reported.
Maia Sandu, who has condemned Russia’s aggressive war in Ukraine and accused Moscow of trying to topple the government in Chisinau in a coup d’état, said on Wednesday that Russia is trying to buy voters in this weekend’s local elections, Agepres reported.
“Maya Sandu is a shame for the country and the main threat to the people of Moldova,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a press conference.
The government of Moldova wants to divert attention from its own shortcomings, Moscow accuses
Zakharova said Moscow was monitoring the situation ahead of Sunday’s election and accused the Moldovan government of trying to use the exaggerated Russian threat to distract from its own significant shortcomings.
“The authorities of Moldova continue to eliminate any manifestations of dissent and carry out repression against political opponents,” Zakharova claims.
In October, the Republic of Moldova outlawed the Shor (opposition, pro-Russian) party of former Soroka mayor Ilan Shor, who is hiding abroad from Moldovan justice, as “unconstitutional,” a move criticized by Russia.
Zakharova also complained that six Russian observers at Sunday’s elections in the Republic of Moldova were not accredited, as well as employees of the Russian embassy in Chisinau.
The leadership of Moldova is “anti-Russian”
The anti-Russian orientation of the Moldovan leadership “significantly increased after Chisinau received the status of a candidate for joining the European Union, because Brussels does not need states in the EU whose citizens treat Russia well,” Zakharova said, according to TASS.
The spokeswoman of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also stated that Maya Sandu, trying to win the favor of the West, is intensifying Russophobia in the Republic of Moldova, “where there is no such thing and never was.”
Maia Sandu is the politician who continues to enjoy the most trust of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, according to the results of a survey conducted by the company iData, published on Thursday in Chisinau, reports Deschide.md.
Thus, 22% of respondents support the President of the Republic of Moldova. In second place is fugitive oligarch Ilan Shor with 10.6%, followed by former pro-Russian president Ihor Dodon with 9.4%.
More than 31% of respondents said that they do not trust any local politician.
The survey was conducted on October 22-29 on a sample of 1,322 participants from 353 settlements. According to Deschide.md, the margin of error is +/- 2.9%.
