At least 10 people were killed and 25 injured when two trains collided in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh on Sunday, Reuters reported, citing News.ro. According to the initial data of the investigation, the cause of the accident was human error.
In the press release of the Ministry of Communications, it was reported that it was about two carriages with passengers that derailed.
According to preliminary reports, the accident was caused by “human error” and the collision occurred because the train carrying passengers between Alamanda and Kantakapalle overshot the signal.
The accident occurred when the Visakhapatnam-Rayagada passenger train stopped due to a broken overhead cable and an oncoming Visakhapatnam-Palasa Express rammed into it, derailing the carriages of the stationary train, a senior railway official said.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has ordered immediate relief measures and asked for urgent dispatch of ambulances from Visakhapatnam and Anakapalli, the nearest districts to Vizianagaram, his office said in a statement.
The accident comes just months after India’s state-run railway suffered its worst train accident in two decades, killing 292 people.
In this accident, a passenger train struck a stationary freight train, derailed and struck another oncoming passenger train.
Indian Railways, the fourth largest railway network in the world, is a state-owned monopoly managed by the Railway Board.
The rail network is undergoing a $30 billion transformation with new trains and modern stations as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s drive to improve infrastructure and connectivity.
