As of July 1, 2023, Romania’s resident population was 21.873 million people, which is 0.3% less than on July 1, 2022, statistics reported on Friday. The population by place of residence represents persons with Romanian citizenship and place of residence on the territory of Romania, which also includes emigrants.

The resident population is different from the permanent population, which includes all citizens of Romania, as well as foreigners or stateless persons residing in the country.

The phenomenon of demographic aging intensified, the elderly population aged 65 and over (3.93 million people) exceeded the youth aged 0-14 by 785,000.

  • As of July 1, 2023, the population by place of residence in the urban environment amounted to 12.23 million people, having decreased by 0.8%. The population by place of residence in rural areas amounted to 9.63 million people and increased by 0.3%.

The female population on July 1, 2023 was 11.2 million people, which is more than 34,000 less than on the same date last year. The number of male population on the same date was 10.673 million people, which is 35 thousand people less than on the same date last year.

Compared to July 1, 2022, the process of demographic aging intensified due to an increase of 0.4 percentage points. the share of the elderly population (65 years and older) and a slight decrease, by 0.1 percentage points, in the share of young people (0 – 14 years).

  • The demographic aging index increased from 121.1 (as of July 1, 2022) to 124.9 elderly persons per 100 young persons (as of July 1, 2023).
  • The average age of the population was 42.4 years, which is 0.3 years more than on July 1, 2022. The median age was 43.0 years and increased by 0.4 years compared to July 1, 2022.
