Saturday night eclipse “schedule”.

The phenomenon begins with the penumbral moon on Saturday at 9:02 p.m., two hours after moonrise. Since the Earth’s penumbra is not very opaque, the color of the Moon will not change much at the beginning of the phenomenon.

However, near maximum, starting at 10:00 p.m., the lower part of the Moon will begin to have a different color than the upper part.

The maximum will occur at 23:14, when the Moon will be completely in the penumbra and about 7% in the Earth’s shadow. At this moment, the Moon will be high in the sky, to the southeast. The exit from the shadow will take place at 11:53 p.m., and the eclipse will end at 1:27 a.m.

Hunter’s Moon – When people went hunting

On October 28 at 11:24 p.m., the Full Moon phase occurs. At this time, the Moon will be in the constellation Aries, and to its left is the planet Jupiter.

In American tradition, there are many cute names for the full moon, “Strawberry Moon,” “Pink Moon,” or “Flower Moon,” but the Moon does not turn red, pink, or the color of flowers as the names suggest. There is also the Harvest Moon (Harvest Moon, in September), but also the Hunter’s Moon (Hunter’s Moon), now at the end of October.

These names first appeared more than a century ago in an annual almanac that was extremely popular in the United States: The Farmer’s Almanac, which also contained information about the phases of the moon and folk beliefs about the moon.

The earliest evidence of the use of the term Hunter’s Moon is in the Oxford English Dictionary in 1710.

Why Hunter Moon? The Farmer’s Almanac says that because the leaves on the trees had fallen and the deer were fat from eating a lot, it was hunting time.

As the people harvested the crops, the fields became more open and small animals came to them to collect the leftover grain, but also foxes came, eager to catch these small animals. It was much easier for hunters to see and observe animals in the field.

This Full Moon after Mid-Autumn is also called the Journey Moon, the Dying Grass Moon, the Sanguine Moon, or the Blood Moon.

What are lunar eclipses?

Lunar eclipses are much less spectacular than solar eclipses. They occur at night when the Moon is full and the Earth is between the Sun and the Moon and the Moon enters the shadow cone of the Earth, at which time the Moon takes on a reddish color that it does not normally have. Lunar eclipses occur much more often than solar eclipses and last longer. They don’t have a small “band of totality” like the Sun, but they can be seen by anyone with the Moon above the horizon.

A partial lunar eclipse occurs when only part of the Moon falls into the Earth’s shadow. When the entire surface of the Moon passes into the shadow of the Earth, we observe a total lunar eclipse.

The last total eclipse visible from Romania was on May 16, 2022, and the next one will be on the morning of March 14, 2025. The next partial lunar eclipse we will see from us will be on the morning of September 18, 2024. .

The last lunar eclipse observed in Romania took place on May 5, 2023.
