Good news for motorists: very soon the legislation will change for minor speed violation less than 5 km/h. In fact, starting in 2024, they will no longer be penalized with points removed from their driving licences!
This measure has been eagerly awaited by the French since it was announced last spring by Gérald Darmanin: the Minister of the Interior has just confirmed the implementation of this reform for January 1, 2024.
“By order of the President of the Republic, from January 1, 2024, points will no longer be deducted for exceeding the speed of less than 5 km/h. The fine will, of course, be saved. A measure of common sense for our fellow citizens” said Gerald Darmanen.
Minor Speeding: Don’t lose points on your license anymore
A minor speed violation of less than 5 km/h is still punishable a fixed fine of 68 euros, for roads where the maximum permitted speed exceeds 50 km/h, or 135 euros for sections with a limit of 50 km/h and less. In addition to this financial penalty, you are also subject to sanctions removing point in your driver’s license.
From January 1, 2024the fixed penalty for speeding will remain in force but points will not be deducted for slightly speeding up to 5 km/h. On October 10, 2023, a law was submitted to the State Council, which allows changes to be made to the Traffic Code in this sense.
A very common offense
According to the Government, small speed violations of up to 5 km/h are the most common violations in our regions: in fact, it is no less 58% of offenses monitored by French radars.
Very often the fruit a a moment of inattentionthese small excesses still led to the withdrawal of points in the driver’s license and could cause numerous difficulties in the daily life of French motorists, sometimes reaching the cancellation of the driver’s license in case of increasing the balance to zero!
