Launched in 2017Opel Crossland is an urban crossover that shares a technical platform with the Peugeot 2008: the latest productions of the German manufacturer, which since 2017 belongs to the PSA group and now Stellantis, also do the same as the Opel Corsa and the Peugeot 208, the Opel Astra and the Peugeot 308, or Opel Grandland and Peugeot 3008.
During restyling in the fall of 2020Opel Crossland uses the new “Vizor” grille and ditches the “X” in the process. But the firm in Rüsselsheim is already working on the next generation Crossland, and according to the latest rumors, it may well revive the well-known name:Opel Frontera.
Opel Frontera: a new generation is being prepared
The Opel Frontera was the first Opel SUV to be produced since 1991, when the German brand was still owned by General Motors. The second generation was sold between 1998 and 2004 before disappearing to be replaced a few years later by the Opel Antara.
As with its upcoming 100% electric SUV coupe, which is set to revive the Manta name, Opel could well pull the Frontera name out of the closet, for future generation of his Crossland. There’s no official word yet, but this third-generation Frontera could adopt more assertive SUV lines as part of the brand’s new styling direction.
Electric city SUV under development
Technically, the model will be based on CMP platform Peugeot 2008 and Jeep Avenger, which will allow offering electrified engines. Under its hood we will indeed find thermal and hybrid engines, as well as a 100% electric versionwhich, oddly enough, should be 156 horsepower and about 400 km of autonomy, like its cousins from the Stellantis group. There should also be a 1.2-liter three-cylinder PureTech gasoline unit with a capacity of 100 horsepower.
We’ll still have to wait a bit to find out more about the upcoming Opel Crossland replacement that’s set to hit the market spring 2024.
