European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Friday wore a scarf with motifs of Islamic art, which she spontaneously received the night before as a gift from a tour guide in the city of Granada, where the leaders of the European Union are meeting from Thursday, Reuters reports.

On Thursday evening, Ursula von der Leyen visited the famous Alhambra palace and fortress in Granada, built by the Muslim rulers of the city in the 13th century, writes News.ro. During the tour, the head of the European Commission complimented the tour guide Sumaya Abdelbi for the silk scarf she was wearing. This one featured a gazelle print inspired by the artwork in the palace.

Such scarves were worn by all the female staff who worked in the Alhambra during the gala dinner of the heads of state.

Abdelbi, who was born in Germany and is of Moroccan descent, told Ursula von de Leyen and her husband details about the palace. “I told her that now she is also part of the history of the Alhambra and she was very impressed,” Abdelbi told Reuters.

“He noticed my scarf, said it was very beautiful, and asked me if he could touch it,” the tour guide said.

When von der Leyen was leaving the event, Abdelbi saw her again and shouted: “I want to give you my scarf!”.

The EU leader returned to accept the gift and take a selfie with Abdelbi.

The scarf, which can usually be bought at the Alhambra gift shop, ran out of stock on Friday.
