The Kremlin said on Monday that “fatigue” with support for Ukraine will increase among Western citizens as European Union foreign ministers try to prove otherwise when they meet in Kyiv, France-Presse and Agerpres reported.
“The fatigue from the absolutely absurd support of the Kyiv regime will increase in various countries, especially in the USA,” said the spokesman of the Russian president, Dmytro Peskov.
The future of US aid is uncertain after it was excluded from a temporary funding deal to avoid a federal government shutdown. American President Joe Biden, however, wanted to reassure, promising not to abandon Ukraine.
Dmytro Peskov added that he expects the US to continue to be part of the equation. “Of course, America will continue to be involved in this conflict, in fact directly,” he told reporters when asked about American assistance.
But the West’s “weakness” will create even more “splits in the political establishment” and lead to “contradictions,” Peskov predicted.
The statements come as European Union foreign ministers met in Kyiv on Monday for a “historic meeting” to express their “solidarity” with Ukraine, a country that has faced a Russian invasion and has ambitions to join the EU.
In the context of a slow Ukrainian counteroffensive and fears of a decrease in Western support for Ukraine, it is about showing Russia that it “doesn’t have to count” on the “fatigue” of the European Union, said French Foreign Minister Kateryna Colonna.
