
Romania is again in first place. We are not talking about the Olympics or sports, but about children at risk of poverty.
Three weeks ago, the voices of politicians, who addressed the young generation with loud words and demands for school success, were heard in all schools and gymnasiums. “Children are the future” is a phrase heard at the beginning of the school year in thousands of pre-university schools, but how realistic is it for decision makers in Romania?
This week, Eurostat published a study on the situation of children at risk of poverty or social exclusion in the European Union in 2022, which belies any belief that children could ever be a priority for Romania.
Unfortunately, we are in the first place, far from our Bulgarian neighbors and with a percentage almost twice as high as the European average.
41.5% – almost half of the juvenile population of Romania is in a critical condition: children suffer from hunger, lack clothes and a roof over their heads. This is our situation, but if we do not see these children in parliament or prevent them through ministries, then they do not exist.
The same dramatic percentage appeared in Eurostat’s analysis in 2020 as well, but then we were looking hopefully at the Child Guarantee and in Brussels there was serious talk about 1 in 4 children in the EU being at risk of poverty. –
