The Mega Millions jackpot was won on Monday, seven weeks after the Aug. 8 drawing, the Florida Lottery said in a statement, Reuters and Agerpres reported on Thursday. Florida is one of 45 US states participating in the Mega Millions lottery, along with Washington and the US Virgin Islands.

That lottery had 31 drawings every two weeks without a winner until the owner of a ticket purchased at a Publix supermarket in Neptune Beach, a town 15 miles outside of Jacksonville, matched all six numbers drawn in the game.

The biggest win in the history of the game

Mega Millions officials said the $1.602 billion jackpot is the largest in Mega Millions history, surpassing the previous record of $1.537 billion set in South Carolina in 2018.

The absolute record for the American lottery belongs to the rival company Powerball with a jackpot of $2.04 billion won from a ticket sold in California in November 2022, according to the website of the organizers.

The odds of winning the top prize are only 1 in 300 million

The winner of the Mega Millions Florida jackpot will be able to choose between receiving the full amount, which will be paid out in annual payments over 30 years, or accepting $794.2 million, which will be paid out in cash on the spot. Lottery winnings are taxable.

According to Florida law, lottery winners who win prizes over $250,000 must not publicly disclose their identity for 90 days after winning.

Buying a lottery ticket for $2, the chances of winning the big prize (jackpot) of the American lottery are about 1 in 300 million.
