Saudi Arabia will “buy” nuclear weapons if Iran gets them first, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said in an interview with Fox News on Wednesday.
MBS has expressed concern about the possibility of Iran, a common adversary of Saudi Arabia and Israel, acquiring nuclear weapons that the US wants to deter, although Tehran denies it is pursuing such a goal. “It’s a bad move,” he said. “If you use it, you’re going to have a big fight with the rest of the world,” he commented.
Asked what would happen if Iran got a nuclear bomb, the Saudi crown prince said: “If they (the Iranians – no) get it (nuclear weapons – no), we’ll have to get it too,” News.ro reported.
“We are concerned that the country will get nuclear weapons. This is bad,” he added. “They don’t need nuclear weapons because they can’t use them,” the crown prince added.
MBS issued the stark warning to Tehran despite the two countries agreeing in March in China-brokered talks to restore relations after years of animosity.
On the other hand, Saudi Arabia and Israel are “getting closer” to an agreement to normalize relations that will be historic, the Saudi crown prince also told Fox News. “We are getting closer every day,” he said in an interview that took place during a meeting between US President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in New York.
