EV Network (EVN), BP Pulse, NEC Group and UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt inaugurated the ‘Gigahub’ on the NEC campus, where National Exhibition Center, an exhibition center located in Birmingham, West Midlands, England. This is the largest charging center for electric cars in Europe.
“This is the largest private investment in electric charging in the UK and a huge vote of confidence in Britain’s role as a leader in green industries. This first-of-its-kind charging hub will be a major transportation hub of the future and will be an important milestone in the deployment of EV charging infrastructure across the country.”said Jeremy Hunt, UK Finance Minister.
Charging hub for simultaneous operation of 180 electric cars
This Gigahub charger can be used by the seven million annual visitors to the National Exhibition Centre, as well as other road users, including the 60 million visitors who pass through the region each year. The NEC campus is truly strategically located, close to the M42 and Birmingham Airport, as well as numerous shops and businesses.
This impressive car park is capable of charging up to 180 EVs at once using 300kW DC chargers offering 30 super fast charging points. There are also 150 additional charging points with a capacity of 7 kW. This offer of two power levels aims to meet the different needs of EV drivers expected at this charging center.
All visitors to the Gigahub will have access to a new Starbucks ride-hailing service, allowing drivers to order drinks or snacks while waiting for their EV to charge.
Partnership with Jaguar
Various participants in this project, The EV Network (EVN), BP Pulse as well as the NEC Group, called on Jaguar to support the launch of this Gigahub electric charger: during August 2023, a fleet of 32 Jaguar I-Paces were used on site to test the infrastructure in terms of energy distribution, fast charging and vehicle connection.
The NEC Campus electric charging center is now available to customers of the British manufacturer through the Jaguar Charging app, expanding the network of more than 500,000 charging points in Europe and the UK.
