
The tragic accident on May 2 made politicians think about increasing the fines in traffic laws. A major amendment bill has been tabled in the Senate with very tough provisions, such as one that would see drivers going 80km/h over the speed limit jailed and their cars confiscated.
The traffic rules were introduced by government decree early last year and then sent to parliament for approval of the changes. Discussions in the Committee on Transport of the Chamber of Deputies were moving in the direction of easing the sanctions imposed by the Government, but the May 2 road accident, in which a driver under the influence of drugs killed two young people and then fled the scene of the accident, seems to have caused a radical change in the attitude towards the political environment.
