Romania is not at risk of being drawn into a war in Ukraine, and there are no signs that Russia wants to attack a NATO country, said the alliance’s deputy secretary general, Mircea Joane, who believes that the concerns of Romanians living near the Danube border with Ukraine are understandable.
“There are no signs that the Russian Federation intends to attack an allied state, that it is Romania, that it is someone else. And this gives strength and power to our alliance. We are the first element of deterrence (…). Obviously, when you listen a few hundred meters or a few kilometers away from your home, from your place of work, the noise of war, obviously it makes you emotional and obviously it creates anxiety and distress. I understand that. But there is no risk for Romania in the sense that it will be involved in this conflict or spread this conflict to us,” Joane said on Monday in the city of Racari in Dambovitsa county, according to Agerpres.
At the same time, the NATO representative announced his intention to visit areas in Tulcea district, located near Ukrainian ports, which are constantly attacked by Russian drones.
“What would happen if we were not in NATO? And perhaps it would be an element of additional confidence that we belong to the strongest alliance in human history. And I really intend to visit in the near future and (…) maybe my presence and my message will be a message of peace, trust and tranquility,” Mircea Joane also said.
Regarding the wreckage of the drones found in the north of Tulcea County, the Deputy Secretary General of NATO showed that there are no signs of an intention to strike the territory of Romania.
“Obviously, an investigation by the Romanian authorities is ongoing. We are in direct contact on the political and military levels with the Romanian ally, and I am convinced that all elements will be clarified and will be transparently presented to public opinion in the future. So, first of all, this is not a deliberate attack. My message as a Romanian is to try to have confidence that the North Atlantic Alliance is taking all measures, now and in the future, to ensure the protection of the entire allied space, including Romania,” said Joane.
In this context, he welcomed the US decision to supplement the air police in the Black Sea.
“So we will have, in addition to the 5,000 Allied soldiers who are in our territory today, additional elements, and that should reassure us and give us a lot of confidence. At the same time, in Vilnius, our leaders adopted a new generation of defense plans, precisely for this type of incident, accident or more serious situation, possible deliberate attacks. That is why the defense plans are much more complete, starting from air police, a much more integrated anti-missile system, we are talking about measures specific to the Black Sea, which in itself is an important area for us and very complex,” he added. NATO Deputy Secretary General stated .
