German car concern Volkswagen is ready for a planned ban on the sale of new cars with internal combustion engines in Europe from 2035, CEO Oliver Blume said on Monday, as quoted by Reuters and Agerpres.
“We are ready for a ban on internal combustion engines in Europe from 2035,” said Oliver Blume at the IAA motor show in Munich.
According to Blum, thanks to the partnership made in China, Volkswagen, the world’s second-largest car manufacturer, will be able to reduce battery costs by reducing the cost of battery cells by 50%.
European automakers are feeling pressure from Chinese electric car makers, who have developed cheaper and more consumer-friendly models in their home market and are now expanding into Europe.
“I think our chances are good. We know how to build quality cars. We will have to work hard on costs,” said Oliver Blume.
The portfolio of the Volkswagen concern consists of 12 brands, including VW cars, Audi, Porsche, Skoda, Lamborghini, Seat, Bentley, as well as MAN and Scania trucks. Volkswagen announced on Tuesday that the Seat brand will no longer make cars, but it won’t disappear entirely.
Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz have prepared for the electrification of their fleet
In April, Volkswagen announced that it had no plans to develop a new model for its iconic Golf due to plans to electrify its fleet.
Volkswagen expects to deliver about 9.5 million vehicles in 2023, up from 8.26 million vehicles last year.
Revenues are also expected to be 10-15% higher in 2023 than in 2022, meaning Volkswagen expects sales of between 307 and 331 billion euros this year.
Also at the Munich Motor Show, competitors of Mercedes-Benz presented a concept called CLA, which opens a new class of cars in the range of the German brand. Mercedes claims that the new CLA will be one of the most efficient electric cars ever made, with a range of over 750km, consumption of 12kWh/100km and fast charging for a range of 400km. km of autonomy in 15 minutes.
The new CLA will be introduced in 2025, followed by other compact electric models, including two SUVs.
