The current artistic director of the Berlin International Film Festival, Carlo Chatrian, will leave the Berlinale after next year’s edition, he said in a personal statement on the event’s website, as quoted by DPA, according to Agerpres.

“I thought that continuity could be facilitated if I remained at the festival, but in the new structure that has been put in place, it is quite clear that there is no longer any room for me to remain as artistic director,” the statement said.

The spokeswoman of the festival confirmed that Chatrian does not see a place for herself in the new concept, except for the position of artistic director.

On Thursday, the German Commissioner for Culture, Claudia Roth, announced that the Berlinale will no longer be coordinated by dual management, but by a single artistic director.

There was a prospect that Chatrian would remain in the Berlinale team, but that has now been dispelled.

“Therefore, the next festival will mark the end of this rewarding journey,” Chatrian said in a statement.

In recent years, he co-directed the festival with Mariette Rissenbeck.

Shortly after the 2023 graduation, it was announced that Riessenbeck would not be renewing his contract as general manager.

The dual leadership is to close the 74th edition of the Berlinale together, and the new leadership will take over after that, a spokesman for the German culture commissioner said on Thursday.
