The drama “The Teachers’ Lounge” directed by Ilker Chatak is Germany’s bid for the nomination in the “best international feature film” category at the Oscars 2024, according to DPA and Agerpres.
The German Film Association, which promotes German cinema worldwide, made the announcement on Wednesday in Munich after deliberations by a jury of independent experts.
“Choice for Teachers’ living roomthe jury nominated a film with a very relevant and universal theme that cannot be resisted,” the members of the German jury said.
The film tells the story of a young, idealistic elementary school teacher, Karla Novak, and the chaos that ensues after one of her students is suspected of theft.
Teacher’s living room outperformed several other important German films in the final score, including Anselmdirected by Wim Wenders.
The Oscar ceremony is up in the air due to the Hollywood strike
The decision on nominations in the category “best foreign feature film” rests with the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), the organizer of the Oscar gala ceremony. His representatives will review all foreign films submitted to him during this period and narrow this list down to 10 nominated films, the names of which will be announced early next year.
In 2023, the Oscar for the best international feature film was awarded to a German-made film All is quiet on the Western Front (“Nothing New on the Western Front”), a new adaptation of the novel of the same name by the German writer Erich Maria Remarque.
The organization of next year’s Academy Awards ceremony is currently on hold due to a strike by Hollywood writers and actors, but the parties hope to reach an agreement before January, when the nominations for the major awards are usually announced.
About 160,000 Hollywood actors went on strike in mid-July, paralyzing film production in the US.
Dubbed the “Oscars of TV,” the Emmys have already been pushed back to 2024 because of the strike after being scheduled to take place this fall.
