On the day that marked 50 years since he became the world leader in men’s tennis, Ilie Nestase spoke, among other things, about the pension he receives from the Romanian state.

The date August 23 meant not only the national day of Romania during the communist period. It was also the moment when the great Ilie Nestase became the leader of the ATP rankings for the first time. Five decades later, Nasty made several revelations about that moment, including how he was rewarded by the state for this performance.

“I was not awarded, I was not even congratulated. I was awarded a military pension in the amount of 1,435 lei per month. This is the reward I get every month. But you must know that I did not expect to be rewarded with anything… But if I continue to give to others and give seriously these special pensions… I heard someone say that “I have a special pension”… If I have a special pension, really special, what the hell are they? How much will they get?”, said Ilie Nestase.
