India is close to a unique foreignization in history. And this is because no one has ever managed to launch a probe to the region of the south pole of the Moon. Russia simply lost the chance to become the first country to achieve such a feat due to the failure of the Luna-25 mission.
Thus, India remains alone in the race for the south pole of the Moon, or more precisely, in the race to launch a probe to explore the site where it plans to build the first permanent base on a celestial body other than Earth.
If the mission goes off without a hitch, the Vikram probe will be the first of its kind to reach the moon’s south pole intact. It is to be followed by the Pragyan rover, tasked with mapping the terrain and analyzing the distribution of various elements in the lunar soil.
The south pole of our natural satellite has become the main target of the space race due to the large amount of water in the form of ice that has been discovered there since 2018. It is the presence of water that makes this area ideal for building a permanent base.
India’s last attempt to reach the lunar pole failed on September 7, 2019. After that, the Indian Space Agency (ISRO) lost contact with the probe, its remains were later found only 600 kilometers from the target.
You can watch the landing live by going to the You Tube page below, starting at 14:50 Romanian time, it should have happened around 15:34.
