Since August 14, five people have drowned in the sea on the coast of Romania. Two other people are missing after entering the sea and are being searched for in Vama Veke and Eforie Nord. Last week, the police in Constanta intervened after 23 calls received through the single emergency number 112, calls about failure to follow the instructions of the rescuers when the red flag was raised.

“Unfortunately, from August 14 to today, we have 16 people who were picked up by a strong current and carried out to sea. Although the intervention of rescuers and rescue teams was prompt, the victims were pulled out and brought to shore quite quickly, we regret to report that five of them have died, two people are still being searched today in Eforie Nord and Vama Veke, and nine “These victims were rescued,” Ana Maria Stoyka, spokesperson for the ISU Konstanz, said on Saturday.

For its part, a spokesman for the Constance County Police said that the police intervened after calls reported that tourists were ignoring the instructions of lifeguards.

“Given that several people have died on the Black Sea coast in recent days, we appeal to everyone in the resorts of the Black Sea coast to respect the instructions of the lifeguards and the meaning of the raised red flag. During this period, public order police officers are constantly working on the beaches, informing the citizens of ConstanČ›a and tourists about the risks they are exposed to, ignoring the red flag, which means that entry into the water is prohibited,” said the spokesperson of the ConstanČ›a police, Olimpia Ceara.

She said police from Constanta intervened last week after 23 calls received through the single emergency number 112, which reported that rescuers had not followed the instructions of the red flag. After the intervention, 16 fines for offenses in the amount of 6,000 lei were applied.

According to the law, disobeying the instructions of rescuers is considered an offense punishable by a fine of 500 to 1000 lei.
