Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Smyhal said on Tuesday, Reuters reported, that the Ukrainian government will build new fortifications and military infrastructure in the northeastern regions bordering Russia and Belarus at a cost of nearly $35 million.

“At the request of Kharkiv and Chernihiv… we allocate UAH 911.5 million ($24.7 million) to Kharkiv and UAH 363 million ($9.8 million) to Chernihiv for the construction of military engineering and fortification facilities,” Shmyhal said in Telegram.

Chernihiv Oblast, which borders Russia and Belarus, was partially occupied at the start of Russia’s large-scale invasion in February 2022, but was later liberated.

Belarus, the Kremlin’s closest ally, initially supported the Russian invasion, opening its borders to Russian troops marching on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv.

Minsk also offered its territory to fighters from Wagner’s mercenary group, whose move to Belarus was part of a deal that ended an attempted insurgency in June.

The eastern part of the Kharkiv region, which borders Russia’s Belgorod region, is still partially occupied and has been the scene of active hostilities in recent weeks.

Since liberating its territories, Ukraine has actively built up defenses on its borders to prevent further invasion, and maintains significant forces in the north.
