Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov told CNN that on Monday or Tuesday he will submit a report to the United States on the use of controversial cluster munitions that the United States supplies to Ukraine. “I hope that these munitions will be more effective than ordinary ones,” said the Kyiv official.

Oleksiy Reznikov said that he is waiting for a report on the effectiveness and consequences of using this type of ammunition and, “probably, on Monday or Tuesday” he will hand it over to the Pentagon.

  • “We will report on the consequences of the use of cluster munitions, and I think this week, Monday or Tuesday, we will have the first report on that that we will send to the Pentagon.
  • I hope that these munitions will be more effective than conventional ones,” the Ukrainian official said, according to CNN.

Reznikov did not elaborate, but said he expected cluster munitions to be “most effective,” especially “against artillery systems, during counter-battery attacks, as well as against armored personnel carriers and combat vehicles.”

American official: Ukrainian army uses cluster munitions “quite effectively” at the front

Cluster munitions supplied to Ukraine by the United States ended up in the hands of the Ukrainian army, which is already using them against Russian troops, White House security spokesman John Kirby said on July 21, quoted by Reuters.

“We’ve had some initial assessments from the Ukrainians, and they’re using them quite effectively, affecting Russian defense formations and troop movements,” Kirby said of the cluster munitions, which Ukraine has vowed to use only to push out Russian troop concentrations.

US President Joe Biden said in early July that he approved the supply of cluster munitions to Ukraine, citing the fact that the Ukrainian army is experiencing a crisis of conventional 155 mm shells, and the US army does not have such shells in stock, so until the American military industry can increase the production of these shells, Washington will supply Ukraine with cluster munitions of the same caliber.

Cluster (or cluster) munitions, especially useful in attacks on troops in trenches, explode in mid-air above the target, releasing dozens of submunitions over a wide area, but some of them do not explode and become a long-term threat to civilians, just like landmines.

Russian Defense Minister Serhiy Shoigu said that after the delivery of American cluster munitions to Ukraine, the Russian army will be forced to resort to “similar” methods of attack, assuring that it has enough of such munitions.

But even before the US statement about sending cluster munitions to Ukraine, both Russian and Ukrainian troops used such munitions in the war started by Russia last year.
