Harghita District Council Chairman Borboli Chaba says a 37-year-old man was mauled by a bear near a village in Mugeni commune and his body parts were also found. Police said they found what appeared to be human remains and that an investigation had been launched.
Borboliy Chaba told the media that the man had been missing for two weeks and parts of his body had been found when they searched for him, according to local residents.
“Two days ago, a young man was allegedly found mauled by a bear because several body parts were found in different places. It appears to be a bear attack and my main problem is that the authorities investigating this case have not communicated with anyone, not even the hunting association in the area. The bear that killed a 37-year-old young man, Dobeni village, Mugeni commune, was on the loose for several days. The young man had been going there for, I don’t know, two weeks, as the locals said, to build or renovate a holiday home (…) that he has there, and after two weeks they didn’t get any signal, they went looking for him and found him thus, torn. I am trying to contact the Minister of Environmental Protection today, this bear, if proven to be a tear, a bear kill, needs to be identified and pulled very quickly. Because that bear, which had already killed a person, attacked a person and ate his body, as the local residents said, so it is clear that part of the body has been eaten, so it should be removed as soon as possible,” said Borboly Chaba. , quoted by Agerpres.
He criticized the government for not taking enough action while people are being killed by bears, and suggested that the environment minister relocate the bears to other parts of the country, as well as European countries with mountainous areas.
This information was also released on President CJ Harghita’s Facebook page, in a video he claimed that he understood from locals that “the police are trying to keep this whole action under wraps”.
IPJ Harghita spokeswoman Maria Plumbu said human-like remains were found and sent for examination, as a criminal case for involuntary manslaughter had been opened.
“On July 19, 2023, the police received a report about the discovery of human remains in Mugheny, Dobeni village. After conducting investigative actions, the police began to remove these remains, which were handed over to specialists of the forensic medical service for examination. The police continue the investigation in coordination with the prosecutor’s office in criminal proceedings on the fact of involuntary manslaughter,” Maria Plumbu said.
