The crash happened Saturday afternoon near Martha’s Vineyard Island Airport in West Tisbury, Massachusetts. The pilot, a 79-year-old man, suffered an emergency during the final approach, Massachusetts State Police said.

Police said the crash “resulted in a hard landing off the runway, causing the aircraft’s left wing to break in half.” Authorities did not release the names of any of the people on the plane, but said both were taken to hospital.

Then the pilot was taken to a Boston hospital in critical condition. The passenger suffered minor injuries and was released from a local hospital, police said.

The 2006 Piper Meridian took off from Westchester County, New York on Saturday afternoon. The pilot and passenger are Connecticut residents, police said.

The crash is being investigated by state police, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). An FAA official said the NTSB is investigating.

State police said the plane was raised and flown to safety at the airport, and the crash site was cleaned up.

The crash comes nearly 24 years after John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife, Carolyn Bessette, and her sister, Lauren Bessette, died in a Piper plane crash near Martha’s Vineyard.
