A senior Ukrainian general has reported new progress on the war’s southern front, saying his troops are “systematically pushing the Russians out of their positions,” The Guardian reports.
Reuters reports that General Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, the commander of Ukrainian forces in the south, said on Telegram on Saturday that the enemy’s losses over the past day amounted to about 200 soldiers.
His comments came against the backdrop of Ukrainian military analysts suggesting that it will not be easy for Ukrainian troops to advance south.
Kyiv has focused on seizing villages in the southeast in an effort to push toward the Sea of Azov and areas near the eastern city of Bakhmut, captured by Russian forces in May after months of intense fighting.
Russian reports say that its forces repelled Ukrainian attacks in eastern Donetsk region, including the city of Bakhmut.
