
Direct investment by non-residents in Romania for the first five months of the year decreased to 3.861 billion euros compared to 3.884 billion euros in the period January-May 2022. Also, in the period January-May 2023, the total external debt increased by 12.533 billion euros, to 157.094 billion euros, according to data from the National Bank of Romania (BNR).
“Non-resident direct investment in Romania amounted to EUR 3.861 billion (compared to EUR 3.884 billion in the period January-May 2022), of which the equity share (including the estimated net reinvested profit) had a net value of EUR 4.176 billion, and intra-group loans they recorded from “capable net worth of 315 million euros”, BNR data show.
For January-May 2023, the current account of the balance of payments was recorded with a deficit of 8.276 billion euros against 9.938 billion euros for January-May 2022. The structure of the goods balance recorded a smaller deficit of 1.161 billion euros, the balance of services recorded a larger surplus of 1.804 billion euros, the balance of primary incomes recorded a larger deficit of 1.150 billion euros, and the balance of secondary incomes recorded a smaller surplus of 153 million euros.
“For the period January – May 2023, the total foreign debt increased by 12.533 billion euros. In the structure: the long-term external debt as of May 31, 2023 amounted to 110.784 billion euros (70.5% of the total external debt), having increased by 13.4% compared to December 31, 2022; Short-term foreign debt on May 31, 2023 recorded a level of 46.310 billion euros (29.5% of the total foreign debt), having decreased by 1.1% compared to December 31, 2022,” the BNR data says.
The service level of long-term external debt for January-May 2023 was 12.9% against 16.2% in 2022. The degree of coverage of imports of goods and services as of May 31, 2023 was 5.1 months against 4.4 months as of May 31, 2023. December 31, 2022
The degree of coverage of short-term external debt, calculated at residual value, by foreign exchange reserves in the NBR as of May 31, 2023 was 90.1% against 80.2% as of December 31, 2022.
