Iga Sviatek stopped in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon-2023, the world leader was defeated by Elina Svitolina, a player with a lot of experience, who returned to the world sheet after becoming a mother (9 months ago). The athlete from Ukraine found the key to the Pole’s game, and the victory took place after three difficult sets (score 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-2).

Set I

Iga showed her attacking intentions from the very beginning of the game: she kept close to the baseline, quickly broke through with her explosive forehand, and the scoreboard was on her side (2-0).

However, after Elina’s tactical changes, the Pole’s momentum faded: realizing that she had no chance if she didn’t take risks, the Ukrainian (76th in the WTA rankings) began to make her opponent uncomfortable with strong and long balls, but also with inspired changes direction

The series brought Svitolina a draw (2-2), but the Ukrainian’s poorly played serve again led the WTA leader to advantage in the table at Tsentralnaya (4-2, and then 5-3).

Returning to the command of the game, Iga showed an unexpected vulnerability: from the score 5-3 in her favor, the Pole lost four games in a row (!), and the first set unexpectedly slipped from her fingers (5-7).

Set II

In the break between sets (the roof was also removed), Iga had a wide-ranging conversation with her psychologist Daria Abramovych. The WTA leader recorded a lot, and the English operators showed several frames with relevant documents.

With the score 1-1, Svitolina incredibly missed the ball near the goal when she was leading 40-0 (Iga had already turned her back). The game unexpectedly returned, and the Pole made a break.

The world leader was trailing 3-1 and a deciding set seemed on the horizon. However, Iga inexplicably lost her compass again, and 3-1 for her became 4-3 for her opponent.

It was back-to-back on serve, although there were plenty of break chances from both sides, and the tiebreak was decided on a tiebreak.

Elina looked like she might end the match in two sets (at one point she was leading 4-1), but Iga made a great comeback to take the match to a deciding set, winning the second set 7-6( 5 ).

Set III

Elina showed no signs of being affected by the loss of the second set, and the deciding match opened with plenty of aggression on returns and long executions. Svitolina made the first break, and then, taking advantage of the serve, moved to the score 3:1.

Iga did not find her rhythm, could not lead draws, and the WTA leader lost her serve again: 4-1 in favor of Elina, with two breaks. Moreover, Svitolina took full control of the game from the shot, and the score changed to 5:1 in her favor.

Svyatek won another game on serve, but was unable to do anything in the rematch: Svitolina had strong nerves, and she closed the match (6-2). The game at Central lasted two hours and 51 minutes.
