The Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed that an inmate at Coleman, Florida, was assaulted Sunday afternoon, but declined to identify the inmate for privacy and security reasons.
“The staff took immediate action to save the inmate’s life,” said Benjamin O’Kone, a spokesman for the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
Emergency personnel transported the prisoner to a local hospital for medical treatment and examination.
Nassar was stabbed 10 times — twice in the neck, twice in the back and six times in the chest — but is in stable condition, according to Joe Rojas, president of the local correctional workers union.
The FBI has been notified of the incident and an internal investigation is underway, O’Kone added.
None of the other employees or inmates were injured.
