On Sunday, the government issued a decree banning “fireworks” during the celebration of France’s national day on July 14.

The move follows unrest sparked by the police killing of 17-year-old Nahel M. last month.

However, the ban does not apply to official fireworks organized by local authorities.

“In order to prevent the risk of a serious violation of public order during the festive events from July 14 to July 15, inclusive, the sale, transportation, transportation and use of pyrotechnic products and fireworks are prohibited on the territory of the country,” the decree reads. published in the Official French Gazette.

Fireworks were a popular weapon during the city’s riots, which included some of the worst violence in France in nearly 20 years.

And even during normal times, Bastille Day evening events in the squares and streets were often disrupted by young people throwing firecrackers in past years.

Prime Minister Elizabeth Bourne said that in addition to restrictions on fireworks, a “large” security presence would be deployed to keep the peace and “protect the French during these two important days”.
