Romanians who work in the Belgian town of Raikevorsel tend to drink more than they should and often make scandals.

Their behavior forced the local authorities to extend the ban on drinking alcohol in public places, which had been in effect at night, for a day.

Local residents have repeatedly complained that Romanians working in their city get drunk, make noise on the streets, commit acts of vandalism, swear and beat people on the street, reports the Belgian publication GVA.

The ban applies in most areas of Rykevorsel, with the exception of terraces and restaurants.

The town’s mayor, Dorien Cuilaerts, says tensions are growing between local residents and the community of Romanians who work as seasonal workers.

“Usually everything starts with excessive alcohol consumption. Last year we fought 50 people here. We want to stop it,” she told Radio 2.

Couillarts said he closed the Romanian restaurant last year because of noise that disturbed residents.
