If you’re under the impression that you see speed cameras on every street corner, whether for speed control, lights or, soon, sound, that’s not just an impression. Their number is growing, and by the end of 2023 their number must exceed the symbolic threshold.
Over the past three years, the number of radars in France has not changed. On 1Er September 2022, there were 4,447 on the territory, the number is very close to the figure at the beginning of 2019 with 4,428 installs. This is explained by several factors.
On the one hand, there was a replacement of many devices that were recognized as “obsolete” and placement of new generation towers.
On the other hand, the deployment of outsourced radar cars, which are taking place in place of the models previously operated by the police or gendarmes, thus freeing up time for law enforcement agencies to carry out other tasks. It also slowed down the deployment of fixed models in France.
Soon the milestone of 5000 radars was exceeded
On 1Er As of September 2022, the fleet of 4,447 devices includes 2,523 fixed speed cameras (including 1,098 turrets), 611 fixed crossing models (red light or level crossing), 472 radar cars (operated by law enforcement agencies or third-party contractors), 501 ground devices (famous binoculars). ) and 340 moving models.
According to radars-auto.com, the number of devices could explode to 5,600 by the end of this year, particularly with the introduction of sound radars and the installation of new devices after several years of “maintenance”. existing stock.
A goose that lays golden eggs?
But how much do these devices cost? In 2019, speed cameras brought in $760 million to the state, according to traffic safety data. In 2020, in particular, due to the health crisis and consecutive births, the radar flashed less and brought in about 553 million euros.
The figures for the past year are not yet known, but according to government forecasts, the state hopes to generate nearly €714 million in revenue through its schemes.
