The VAR system was introduced last year in the Romanian competition, and the FRF now presents the findings made by the Central Refereeing Commission (CCA).
Last season, 318 out of 322 Super League matches were broadcast on video.
The CCA’s conclusions after a year with VAR in the Super League
1. VAR is needed
When difficult situations arose in the game, the referees had the opportunity to correct certain obvious mistakes.
1,368 checks were in the VAR room last season.
126 VAR interventions were required to correct initial decisions (9.2% of all checks).
“In practice, we turned on VAR every 2.5 matches, an average similar to what we find in top leagues or UEFA competitions,” says Kyros Vassaras, President of CCA.
2. The pressure increases with the circle
As the end of the championship approached, VAR intervened more and more often.
51 VAR interventions occurred in the second leg of the Championship, compared to 38 in the round, and a further 37 interventions in the play-off/play-off/play-off involving the number of games, a third less than in the round/return.
81 VAR interventions out of a total of 126, i.e. 64%, occurred in the second half of games. In the play-offs/play-outs, the percentage of interventions in the second half even increased to 78%.
“Important VAR interventions and then making the best final decisions protected the competition last season,” Vassaras added.
3. Penalty shootout, above
68% of the total number of checks related to the awarding/non-awarding of a penalty, more than a third – checking possible handball situations.
61% of cases where the referee viewed the phase on the side monitor (96 in total) involved the awarding/non-awarding of a penalty.
“As we got closer to the end of the season, we saw an improvement in what it means to make the best decisions with VAR. I am convinced that the next season will be even better,” concluded Vassaras.
On Saturday from 20:00 at the “Ili Oana” stadium in Ploiești, the Romanian Super Cup will be played: Farul Constanta – Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe.
