The US Federal Aviation Administration has certified a vehicle that a Californian startup describes as a flying car and the first all-electric vehicle that can fly and travel on roads to receive US government approval, CNN reports.
Alef Automotive said the vehicle/plane, dubbed the Model A, is the first flying vehicle that can be driven on public roads and can park itself like a regular car.
How much would such a flying car cost?
It also has vertical takeoff and landing capabilities. It will reportedly be able to carry one or two passengers and have a range of about 320 kilometers and a flight range of about 177 kilometers.
The company plans to sell the car for $300,000, and the first delivery is expected at the end of 2025.
The FAA confirmed that it had issued the company a special certificate of airworthiness, which allows the aircraft to be used for limited purposes, including exhibitions, research and development.
The FAA said the Alef is “not the first aircraft of its type” to receive a special certificate of airworthiness.
As the FAA is currently developing policy for electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicles, the certificate limits the locations and purposes for which the machine can fly.
However, Alef noted that his car is different in that it can operate both on the road and in the air, look like a normal car and park in a normal parking space.
