If the airbag has been democratized in recent decades in the world of cars, in the world of two-wheeled vehicles, for obvious technical reasons equipment manufacturers have had to find other solutions to integrate this device for motorcycle and scooter users.
Today there are airbags for drivers of two-wheeled vehicles, but they are built directly into the driver’s equipment, not the car itselfunlike a car.
20 years after the Honda GoldWing
There are helmets equipped with airbags, as well as jackets or pants. But by 2025, two-wheelers must make major progress, with one of the first built-in airbags. Why “one”? Almost 20 years ago, Honda has already launched a motorcycle with a built-in airbag. It was the GoldWing, a particularly massive motorcycle, that allowed such a device to be integrated.
Given the technical limitations and the space occupied, this solution did not have much success among other manufacturers. But Swedish equipment manufacturer Autoliv intends to launch its own system by 2025.
Expected arrival in 2025
“Bike airbag”, as this concept is called, really should will be put into production in the first quarter of 2025. This system works almost the same as in the Honda GoldWing, with protection of the driver in the event of a frontal collision thanks to the frontal collision sensor.
As a hardware manufacturer, Autoliv obviously aims to sell its products to motorcycle and scooter manufacturers. One of the first to win is Piaggio, with which the Swedish company has been cooperating in this field for several years. The Italian company has already applied for a patent for this integrated system for its MP3 three-wheeled scooter.
