A fine that entails new thermal cars weighing more than 1.8 tons should be extended next yearaccording to the statements of the Minister of Transport Clement Bon.

According to the minister, during the intervention with the “Grand Jury RTL-Le Figaro-LCI”, the threshold for applying this tax will be “gradually decreasing, most likely from the financial bill for 2024”.

Measurement “for environmental reasons”

The Minister of Transport emphasized that it is necessary to take into account the weight of vehicles “for environmental reasons”. The heavier the vehicle, the more materials it contains and the more energy it uses to move, resulting in higher CO emissions2 and therefore contributes to global warming.

The measure is part of the second phase of a major energy sobriety plan unveiled by the government on June 20. It complements other measures such as promoting car sharing, ministries buying refurbished phones or even banning air conditioning in buildings with temperatures below 26 degrees.

“Vehicle weight thresholds will be discussed as part of the 2024 financial bill”a government source added.

No fines for the weight of electric vehicles

On the other hand, contrary to some rumors that may have circulated recently, the increase in heavy vehicle tax will not affect electric vehicles in 2024, as they emit less CO2 than those equipped with heat engines, even if they are heavier because of the battery.

The minister emphasized the need for a certain sequence of this measure, noting: “We are at a transition stage, so it is important to develop electric cars in France and Europe”and that “logical development to take into account weight criteria”he said.
