The Hermitage in Amsterdam will change its name to the H’ART Museum on September 1 after severing ties with the Hermitage in St. Petersburg following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, director Annabel Birney announced on Monday, DPA reported, citing Agerpres.

In the future, the museum will cooperate with three international partners: the British Museum in London, the Center Pompidou in Paris and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington.

The institution in Amsterdam faced difficulties after severing ties with the museum in Russia, without having its own collection. The museum has always relied on a large collection in St. Petersburg – since its opening in 2009, 30 exhibitions of items from the Russian Museum have been presented.

After the Hermitage split, Dutch museums stepped in and loaned the best works from their collections, including paintings by Rembrandt, Vermeer and Van Gogh.

Now there will be “an exciting new step”, as Annabel Birney said.

According to her, “large art exhibitions and intimate presentations” are planned with international partners.

A five-year contract was signed with the Pompidou Center in Paris, which will be closed for reconstruction from 2024.

The first major exhibition at the H’ART museum is scheduled for mid-2024 with the works of the Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky.

The video installation Clubbing (2012) by Martina GutiĆ©rrez from the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum is currently on display at the museum. In 2026, the exhibition “Feminine power” will be presented at the British Museum.
