In 2020, Volkswagen began the transition to electricity only with the release of the compact ID.3. This name was not chosen by chance, ID stands for “Intelligent Design”, the name of this new range dedicated to battery powered models. After a few months, she was helped crossover ID.4, located on the upper segment. Finally, from 2022, the ID family has two additional models. THE crossover ID.5, cut derivative of ID.4. And less rational ones are already known ID.Buzz, neo-retro version of Volkswagen combi from the 50s! The range will be supported soon new salon ID.7 (equivalent in size to the Passat), which was introduced recently. Let’s add in passing that the Chinese market will benefit from specific models ID.4 X, ID.6 Crozz and, finally, ID.6 X. In such a short time, the German manufacturer has not been idle, and the development of the electric power industry remains one of its priorities.
Two electric platforms in the group
Whoever says electricity is talking about the platform. For manufacturers previously used to exclusively thermal platforms, developing a platform designed for electric models is quite a challenge. To save money, most developed ua single platform, modular and adaptable for several sizes and categories of models. E-GMP at Hyundai, Renault-Nissan’s CMF-EV, Geely’s SEA and Volkswagen’s famous MEB, which equips all ID models. However, Volkswagen is not just one brand, but a group of several brands involved in electrification. There are also Skoda, Audi, Cupra and Porsche Example. If Skoda and Cupra already use the MEB platform (Audi on the Q4 e-tron), then Audi and Porsche are associated on the new platform. It’s called the PPE, and it’s due to power the next A6 e-tron what will happen next year. All that is about to change, and Volkswagen has just announced at a conference to its investors that it finally wants develop a single platform group that will replace the OIE and PPE.
SEM + PPE = SSP
Christened SSP, must be inaugurated by the Volkswagen model until 2026. It should fit all sizes of models. From small city cars to large SUVs. It also needs to be versatile in terms of the power it can deliver to electric motors. Volkswagen announces power from 120 to 1300 kW, i.e. 163 and 1767 horsepower ! It also accepts very high power charging: Only 12 minutes to recover from 10 to 80% battery charge. The features required for each model size will be adapted for each brand. Volkswagen for small models, Audi for medium, Porsche for large. The one who should lay the first stone of this project is this Volkswagen Trinity, a large electric sedan that competes with Tesla…
