The head of Ukraine’s military intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, said that Russia has completed preparations for an attack on the Zaporizhzhya NPP, Kyiv Independent reports.
Responding in an interview with the New Statesman to a question about whether a decision had already been made to carry out sabotage at the plant, Budanov replied that the plan was “developed and approved” – all that remained was the order to continue. “Then it can happen in a matter of minutes.”
Earlier, Budanov warned that the Russian troops additionally mined the plant’s cooler.
According to the head of intelligence quoted by the publication, nuclear reactors can melt down from ten hours to 14 days if there is no cooling. Meanwhile, Russian troops can use “technical means to accelerate the catastrophe”.
The military intelligence of Ukraine also learned that Russian troops moved equipment filled with explosives to four of the six power units of the nuclear power plant, the New Statesman writes.
The possibility of Russian sabotage at the Zaporizhzhya NPP was reported earlier, but, according to Budanov, “the situation has never been as serious as it is now.”
And President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Thursday that Ukrainian special services received information that Russia is considering a “terrorist” attack on the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant with the release of radiation.
