Emma Watson probably didn’t expect to find herself at the center of the latest debate when she posted a photo of herself wearing a sky blue Loewe dress to Instagram on Monday, but many fans online seemed confused by the outfit, which appeared to defies gravity, writes CNN.

In the image, an asymmetric mini dress with a plunging neckline and loosely hanging pleats floats past Emma Watson’s body. It just doesn’t seem to have any visible means of support.

The optical illusion prompted some Harry Potter fans to ask Watson, who played Hermione Granger in the blockbusters, whether the robes were the result of wizarding at Hogwarts rather than fashion.

“This dress had wingardium leviosa written all over it,” is the top comment on Watson’s post, which refers to the levitation spell used in the books and movies. Other, less kind comments compare the product to a broken umbrella or what happens “when you try to fold a leaf”.

But the magic of the dress lies in its masterful construction. Loewe, the Spanish label now headed by fashion designer Jonathan Anderson, has experimented with dresses that create optical illusions with great success in recent seasons, from radical silhouettes that change with the eye to looks that trick the eye and make you see double.

Watson’s mini dress comes from her Spring/Summer 2023 collection, which played with structure and shapes and included several dresses with similar cuts.

Since then, pieces from the collection have been seen on Zendaya, Emily Ratajkowski and Dakota Fanning, who each wore looks with striking anthurium blooms, while Gal Gadot opted for a more sophisticated black midi dress for a recent event at Tiffany & Co. from New York.

Beyoncé kicked off her Renaissance Tour in a custom Loewe bodysuit with a black glove motif and red nails to mimic the star’s hands, while Karlie Kloss announced her pregnancy on the Met Gala red carpet in a dress with illusion pearls by the brand, and last week Jennifer Lawrence hit the red carpet in Madrid for the filming of her new movie No Hard Feelings in a nude Loewe sweetheart neckline dress.

Loewe isn’t the only brand turning heads this season with surreal dress shapes — presenting its latest Haute Couture collection in January, Viktor & Rolf defied the laws of physics by creating ball gowns on the models who wore them. At Cannes, model Elsa Hosk took to the red carpet in one of the most sophisticated (and spatially simple) looks, which included a second corset that seemingly didn’t fit her body.
