35 degrees since the first part of spring

Extreme heat came on April 10, 1985, when +35.5 C was recorded in Beche, a record temperature for April at the national level. At that time, the temperature in Beche is usually +18°C, so the record set the temperature 17°C above average.

There were no other April episodes with +35 C. At the beginning of May 2003, there were hot days (for example, +37.5 C in Calarasi on May 3). The temperature above 35 C in May is extremely rare.

The oldest record of +35 C, which has not been exceeded, dates back to May 16, 1889, when this temperature was recorded in Satu Mare.

At the Bucharest Băneasa weather station on May 13, 1958 it was +36.9 C, and on May 17, 1969 it was +35.1 C.

One of the strongest heat waves was between 15 and 25 July 2007, and many southern cities had ten consecutive days with a maximum above +35 (e.g. Calarasi, Drobeta-Turnu-Severin and Bucharest). Drobeta-Turnu-Severin also had three days with highs above 40C, and Sulin had over 20 “tropical” nights that month (with lows not falling below 20C).

Where it can never be 35 degrees

At an altitude of more than 1000 meters, there can never be maxima above 35 C, and at 600-700 m such values can be reached once or twice per decade. In Predial, the absolute maximum was +33.2°C, in Brasov +37.3°C, and in Merkurya-Chuk +36°C. In Yoseny, 750 m away, the absolute maximum was +35.7°C.

Summers were unusually cool in the 1970s, with highs in Drobeta-Turnu-Severin, for example, not exceeding 35 C in 1975 and 1976.

In recent decades, they have not exceeded 35 degrees, even in one of the warmest places in the country: the city of Sulina in the Delta, a place that is also famous for its small temperature difference between night and day. In Sulin in 1946 it was +37.5 C, and in this century in the summer of 2019 and 2010 it was over 34 C.
