It was unveiled with great fanfare last weekend live from the Paris Air Show. Renault Rafale, a name closely associated with aeronautics, which the manufacturer wanted to celebrate in an atypical setting. You are, of course, familiar with the Dassault Rafale, the flagship of the French Air Force and technology. But do you know Caudron-Renault Rafale ? This racing plane dates back to 1934! At that time, Renault was trying to gain a foothold in aeronautics and in 1933 bought the French company of the Codron brothers. Rafale is the first aircraft of the Renault era and it will multiply records. On July 8, 1934, driver Hélène Bouchet took second place in the 12 Hours of Angers., after a 12-hour flight in his Rafale. To this legendary plane and the pilots who made it famous Renault pays tribute in the very first commercial for its Rafale.
From a racing plane to a coupe SUV
After 90 years, the Rafale has changed a lot. A small plane turned into a large family SUV-coupe. This is the third model in the Austral family, but it is based on the elongated space platform. Renault strives also offer a less rational, more sporty and atypical model, create a crush. The Rafale is also set to embody the new top of the line Losange, previously represented by the large SUV Koleos. Is he worthy? Even at the stylistic level, a gap with Austral and Space is noticeable. The Rafale has much more aggressive and edgy lines that contribute to this promotion to a high level. We recognize the touch of Gilles Vidal, former head of Peugeot design. Aboard, The Open R’Link console is taken from other modelsand features the original Google infotainment system. We expected a body Arkana, in the end it is much more than that.
The new top of the Renault model range
Thanks to the long wheelbase of the Espace, the internal volume is very generous. In response to the credo “cars for life”, Renault presented a wonderful innovation… Solarbay is a large panoramic roof, which has the peculiarity of being electrical occultism. There are no blinds, the glass darkens when the button is pressed. This is equipment that we usually see in German or Japanese premium! Under the hood, the Rafale is only offered as a full hybrid. Only at its launch Block for 200 horsepower already seen on Austral and Space will be available. A new 300 horsepower 4X4 unit will arrive later, which will be associated with the 4Control steering wheel. To emphasize this is quite rare, to see a Renault with such power, and even more so a Renault 4X4, is rare. Previously, there was only Koleos, and again its four-wheel drive was provided by Nissan. With its Rafale, Renault seems to want to replay the Arcana game. He has enough funds, but it will of course depend on the prices…
