Passenger traffic at the country’s largest airport, Eleftherios Venizelos, skyrocketed last month, marking a historical high.

According to the statistics “El. Venizelos, Athens Airport passenger traffic reached 2,538,086 million passengers in May, an increase of 23.4% compared to 2022 (the period during which the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on air travel), but also increased by 11.1% compared to pre-pandemic 2019.

Both domestic and international passenger traffic exceeded 2022 levels by 20.6% and 24.8%, respectively. Compared to 2019, the passenger traffic of both domestic and international flights increased by 15.6% and 9.1%, respectively.

In total, in the first five months of the year, the airport’s passenger traffic reached 9.15 million people, which is 39.9% more than in 2022, but also 5.9% more than in 2019.

In particular, both domestic and international passenger traffic exceeded the level of 2022 by 29.9% and 45.1%, respectively, and also showed an increase compared to 2019 by 7.9% and 4.9%, respectively.

At the same time, the number of flights at Athens International Airport reached 80,878 in the first five months of 2023, recording an increase of 17.4% compared to 2022 and 4.1% compared to 2019 levels. 23.4%, respectively, compared to 2022, while they also increased compared to 2019 by 8% and 1.3%, respectively.
