Iran this week will reopen its diplomatic missions in Saudi ArabiaAn Iranian foreign ministry official said today, months after Tehran and Riyadh agreed to end years of rivalry in a Chinese-brokered deal.
This was announced today by a diplomatic source in Riyadh.
In March, Iran and Saudi Arabia agreed to restore relations. The enmity of these two regional rivals threatened stability and security in the Middle East and fueled regional conflicts from Yemen to Syria..
“To implement the agreement… the Iranian embassy in Riyadh, our consulate general in Jeddah and our office at the Organization of Islamic Cooperation will officially open on Tuesday and Wednesday,” spokesman Nasser Kanani said.
“The Iranian embassy will reopen on Tuesday at 6:00 pm local time (and Greek time) in the presence of a new Iranian ambassador,” a Riyadh-based diplomat, who asked not to be named, told AFP.
Last month, Tehran appointed Alireza Enayati as its ambassador to Saudi Arabia, which severed ties in 2016 after its embassy in Tehran was seized during a row over the execution of a Shia cleric in Sunni Riyadh. Relations began to deteriorate a year earlier when Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates intervened in a war in Yemen, where the Iranian-allied Houthi movement toppled the Saudi-backed government and seized the capital Sana’a.
