The young man, dressed in black, was holding a book of a play about the Tiananmen Square persecution called May 35, another way of referring to the events in Tiananmen Square, which took place four days after May 31, when he was arrested.

One woman, who was briefly interrogated and searched before being released, told AFP with a shrug:We all know what day it is“.

Trying to erase memory

In mainland China, authorities have wiped out all traces of the Tiananmen Square events.

History books do not mention them, and online discussions on the subject are systematically censored.
