The Ukrainian capital’s air defenses reportedly successfully repelled a new Russian drone attack on the night of Saturday into Sunday, and a Ukrainian drone was reportedly spotted over the Russian-held Crimean peninsula.
“According to the first information, not a single air target reached the capital,” Serhiy Popko, head of the Kyiv military command, said on the Telegram messenger early Sunday.
“Air defense destroyed everything that was heading towards the city from their distant approaches.”
Russia has repeatedly attacked Kiev since May, mostly at night, ahead of a long-awaited Ukrainian counter-offensive to retake the territory in what Ukrainian officials say is an attempt to inflict psychological distress on civilians.
Eyewitnesses told Reuters they heard several explosions in the Kyiv region, but not in the city, due to what sounded like air defense systems hitting targets.
All of Ukraine was in a state of air alert for almost three hours. Unverified reports of explosions in Krivoy Rog, in southern Ukraine, near the central city of Kropyvnytskyi and in the northeastern Sumy region, appeared on Ukrainian social networks. There were no direct officials on this occasion.
At the same time, a drone was shot down in Dzhankoysky District of Crimea, a Ukrainian peninsula annexed by Russia in 2014, a Moscow-appointed official in the region said.
In a message on Telegram, Oleg Kryuchkov reported that windows were broken in the area, saying that there would be an update in the morning.
Reuters stresses that it cannot confirm the information about the downed unmanned aircraft in the Crimea.
There is a Russian military airfield near Dzhankoy. According to Ukrainian officials, this vast territory has become the largest Russian military base on the Crimean peninsula.
In addition, the number of people injured in a drone attack on Saturday evening on the outskirts of the Dnieper River in eastern Ukraine has risen to 20 people.
