President Volodymyr Zelenskyi insisted on Thursday that Ukraine should become part of NATO and called on the military alliance to provide security guarantees if membership is now impossible.

Responding to a question about Ukraine’s desire to join the Alliance, Kremlin spokesman Dmytro Peskov said: “We regret to state that this shows the unwillingness, unwillingness and inability of the Kyiv regime to resolve issues at the negotiating table.”

“Ukraine’s membership in NATO is certainly one of our main sources of irritation and will be a potential problem for many, many years,” Peskov said.

“Many EU countries, surprisingly, are well aware of this. But, unfortunately, Washington directs and pays for the music in NATO. The EU is just an obedient instrument in this orchestra,” continued Vladimir Putin’s spokesman

“The Russian Federation… will ensure its interests and security. This excludes the expansion of NATO and its direct approach to our borders,” said Peskov.

At a summit in Bucharest in 2008, NATO leaders agreed that Ukraine and Georgia would one day become NATO members.

However, to date, no specific step or timetable for Ukraine’s effective rapprochement with NATO has been published.

The Kremlin has long viewed NATO’s expansion into Eastern Europe as evidence of Western hostility toward Russia and cited it as the main reason for its decision to send tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine on February 24, 2022, provoking the biggest conflict Europe has seen. since the end of World War II.
