
A slight increase, despite the beginning of the tourist season, was recorded in April in terms of unemployment in our country, while the data of the Hellenic Statistical Office (ELSTAT) show a percentage of 11.2%, slightly increasing compared to March (11.1%). %), significantly lower (by 1.5 percentage points) than April 2022’s 12.7%. Thus, the total number of unemployed is estimated at 527,706 people.
April is the third month in a row that the unemployment rate is about the same. They were preceded by February and March with 11.1%. A fact that, according to experts, shows that we are probably at the very heart of the problem, the so-called “structural” unemployment, which is not associated with a decrease in demand for labor, but with a mismatch between supply and demand, since the demand for some industries (specialties or geographic areas) is growing, while others are declining.
In particular, according to ELSTAT data, the number of employed was 4,166,984 people, which is 65,128 people more than in April 2022 (+1.6%). However, compared to a month earlier, ie. in March of this year, the number of employees decreased by 36,984 people, or 0.9%.
The indicator increased to 11.2% from 11.1% in March. The number of unemployed is estimated at 527,706 people.

In terms of persons not in the labor force, i.e. persons under 75 who are not working and not looking for work, their number was 3,111,534, which is 24,404 less than in April 2022 (-0, 8%), and 26,477 people more than in April 2022 (-0.8%). In terms of qualitative data, unemployment remains female – in April last year, the unemployment rate for women was 15%, which is almost twice as high as for unemployed men (8.3%). In addition, unemployment remains very high among young people aged 15 to 24, standing at 27.4% in April.
Eurostat’s unemployment data for April 2023 was also released yesterday, showing a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the eurozone at 6.5%, compared with 6.6% in March 2023 and 6.7% in April 2022.
